The city of Merida was founded on January 6, 1542 by Francisco de Montejo.

The population of Merida is 950,000 people.

The main industry of Merida is tourism, assembly plants, and fishing.

The main language is Spanish. English is spoken in many places. The native Mayan language is still used by many people.

The Yucatan area exports sisal rope, silver jewelry, orange products, aloe vera, handcrafts, clothing, honey, and some petroleum products.

The major religion of the area is Catholic, but there are some Baptist, Presbyterians, Jehovah´s Witness and other beliefs.

The climate in Merida is very tropical. During the months of June to September it often rains everyday for a hour in the early afternoon. With the rain, the temperatures cool off the summer evenings.
